English Language Learning Content
This document describes this free product aimed at computer users who are interested in learning or improving their English Language skills. Suitable audiences include primary school children, teenagers, adults, parents and educationalists.
The product takes the form of a content bundle of games, videos and Mp3s which is preinstalled on your computer. The content was developed by English Language Training (ELT) leaders the British Council and the product is designed by Intel Corporation’s award winning Performance Learning Solutions. The British Council is an industry leader in ELT and offer face-to-face English language courses in 80 teaching centres around the world. They administer more than two million exams, including IELTS tests in more than 100 countries every year. They accredit 500 teaching centres in the UK. Their content, teaching and qualifications help people around the world improve their education and career prospects.
The bundle is made up of a homepage which will act as a user interface (see screenshot 1). The user interface and content breaks down along two lines: by general curricula and via theme. The first reflects general curricula (by school level) and the second reflects a more traditional ELT paradigm organised by theme. Users can launch and view the individual pieces of British Council and complementary skoool™ content from a variety of 'pages'.
1.1. General Curricula alignment and skoool™ content
The content is organized by general educational levels via a horizontal navigation at the top of the screen. There a variety of content that is suitable for Primary children of different ages. The Secondary content is broken into ‘Lower Secondary’ and ‘Upper Secondary’. This navigation leads to a section where user can view skoool™ Maths and Science content. This allows users to practice their English skills and improve their Maths and Science skills. There is also a parents section where parents view a brouchure to help Learn English as a family.
1.2. Kids Content
The content can also be accessed by theme and this has proven to be a very intuitive way of learning for children in the past. The ‘Learn English - kids’ section reflects the organisation of content by the British council.
The content itself is made up of a selection of interactive games organised under 5 different category types. When users select a theme they will be shown a list of games from which they can view individual pieces of content (see screenshot 2).
The ‘central’ section again reflects the traditional British Council organisation of content. The content is aimed at individual from 12 years of age up to young adults. The content is more detailed and again builds up the pillars of Language learning. The content is organised under a variety of categories such as; 'Quick Grammar' and 'Vocabulary'.
1.4 Advanced - skoool™ – Maths and Science Content
The Advanced selection contains award winning Maths and Science content from Intel’s Performance Learning Solutions. The content helps students to practice their English and improve their Maths and Science skills. There is content for both Primary and Secondary school students. The Primary content is divided into Maths and Science content. The Secondary content is divided into Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology
